Tucked along the Kiawah River, The Dunlin is one of Charleston’s most sought-after wedding destinations for couples planning a true wedding weekend. The Dunlin Wedding Venue Guide offers my unique vendor perspective on having a wedding weekend at the resort. A location with Auberge level service with relaxed Lowcountry luxury, brought to life through interiors by celebrated designer Amanda Lindroth.
Known for her breezy, Caribbean-influenced aesthetic, Lindroth’s touch is felt throughout the property. From airy guest rooms to porch-lined gathering spaces she created a setting that feels effortless. For planner-led weddings that prioritize guest experience, seamless flow, and beautiful backdrops from start to finish, The Dunlin offers a polished, coastal retreat unlike anywhere else in the Charleston area.
Quick vibe check
The Dunlin sits on the Kiawah River in the Charleston Sea Islands which is about 20 miles from Charleston, and a 45-50 minute drive. It looks like a dreamy, elevated “Sea Island summer house” retreat with wraparound porches, marsh views, a riverfront pool, and that Auberge polish.
I’ve stayed on property more than once, and let me tell you, it is right up your alley if you have a taste for a high-end, classy Southern setting.
Why couples pick The Dunlin
- A true wedding weekend property: guests can stay onsite, dine onsite, and you can build in welcome events + recovery moments.
- Indoor-outdoor reception flexibility with the River Barns + lawns that are very weather-proofable for the Lowcountry.
- Editorial backdrops everywhere: porches, marsh boardwalk vibes, live oaks, golden grasses, and clean coastal architecture.
- Auberge-level service with an in-house events team and full resort amenities.
- Fully Custom wedding spaces allowing for creative freedom.

The Event Spaces
Auberge groups the core venues under “The River Barns” and the surrounding lawns/fields. They are tucked along a separate part of the property near The Goatery.
The Shippon
- Light-filled, lofty barn-style ballroom with shiplap and a wall of windows that can open to bring the outside in. This is typically your reception anchor (and the easiest “Plan A + Plan B” space).
- 5,583 sq ft | Max capacity: 525
The Shippon space is where custom weddings come to life. With soaring ceilings, expansive windows, and a flexible, open layout, the space serves as a blank canvas for fully tailored design. From large-scale floral installations and custom lighting to thoughtful floor plans that evolve throughout the evening.
Lime House
- Waterside room with fireplace lounge energy; great for rehearsal dinner, after-party setups, or flip spaces
- 2,575 sq ft | Max capacity: 236
Lime House carries a similar airy, barn-inspired aesthetic to The Shippon, but with a more intimate, lounge-like feel that makes it ideal for after-party celebrations at The Dunlin. Its warm interiors and flexible layout transition effortlessly from elegant evening events to high-energy late nights, giving couples a dedicated space to keep the celebration going without losing momentum.
The Riverbank
- The big green lawn framed by The Shippon + Lime House, with marsh views
- 5,428 sq ft
Commonly: ceremonies, cocktail hour, tented receptions, or outdoor dancing.
Yarrow Field
- Open field framed by live oaks + cordgrass
- 7,000 sq ft
The Dunlin Wedding Venue also provides shuttle transportation for guests between the main resort and the event spaces on the coolest Dunlin branded mini bus. Shuttles run as needed throughout the event, allowing guests to move comfortably between locations without moving personal vehicles.
Getting ready spaces
At The Dunlin, getting ready is usually in hotel rooms/suites and it works beautifully if you book smart.
Best options for the couple
- Sweetbay Suite as the “getting ready + detail styling + portraits” home base (more room for hair/makeup + clean backgrounds).
- River Cottage when you want a separate, smaller prep footprint near event spaces (or for groom’s lounge / quiet reset).
- A Resort Suite you may already be staying at on property
A vendor perspective: The River Cottage space is not quite big enough for an adequate getting ready, especially not for hair, makeup, and photos. It’s better for keeping belonings in a separate area during your reception. Idealy for getting ready you want to keep a room at the resort, preferably the Sweetbay Suite, as the River Cottage room can get very tight very quickly!
Pro tips that matter
- Aim for porch access. The porches are basically built-in “bridal editorial set.” The more room you have for natural light, the better.
- Ask about early access. Standard check-in is 4:00 PM (checkout 11:00 AM) So for wedding-day readiness you’ll want the rooms held from the night before, or coordinate early access with the events team.

Lodging + guest experience
A part of the attraction to The Dunlin is its onsite lodging and attractions around the resort. Not only does the resort have activities, a pool, and a spa, but its within the Kiawah River Community. Its truly a serene escape, and perfect for an all-in-one guest experience.
- 72 guestrooms + 20 suites onsite
- Multiple food & drink outlets and a very “hang here all weekend” feel:
- Linnette’s (breakfast/lunch/dinner)
- Willet Room (lobby bar/lounge)
- The Cove (poolside dining)
- Freshfields Village (a shopping center just down the road)
- Resort fee exists ($52 per room, per hotel policies), so planners usually flag that early for guest transparency.
- Some separate rental properties within the community and around Kiawah Island for additional/other accommodations.
Minimum spends + pricing realities
Here’s the honest deal: The Dunlin does have standard wedding minimum spends, but minimums can change based on:
- day of week (weekday vs weekend)
- month (winter/summer vs peak spring/fall)
- buyout vs non-buyout
- spaces used + duration of events + rain plan needs
What is helpful context:
Auberge’s own press info positioned rates starting at $749 as a general lodging rate reference at time of launch, but live pricing varies depending on season. A true “full property buyout” is the most straightforward way to keep things seamless (and private) at a hotel venue. Full buyouts are available, but are typically structured around taking a significant portion (or all) of the resort’s room inventory for a multi-night wedding weekend; exact terms vary by season/date and must be quoted by the events team.
Expect minimums to be quoted as a combination of site fees + food & beverage minimums + service/admin + staffing (and, if buyout, room revenue commitments). Your best leverage is date flexibility and/or building a full weekend that makes the property excited to prioritize you.
Catering + Bar
This is an in-house culinary program, which is typical for luxury resort venues. Auberge describes events at The Dunlin as pairing “authentic South Carolinian cuisine” and “epicurean coastal dining,” with an in-house events team.
Practical planning notes:
- Ask if they allow any outside specialty items or if they accommodate for this as well (late-night pizza, cultural desserts, etc.) and what the “approved vendor” process looks like.
- Ask bar structure early (consumption vs packages, required liquor tiers, whether specialty cocktails impact minimums).

Hiring a planning team
Weddings at The Dunlin are best executed with a full-service, high-end planner who understands how to manage complex event flow across a luxury resort setting. From coordinating multiple event spaces and transportation logistics to overseeing vendor load-ins, rain plans, and guest experience across an entire weekend, this is a venue where thoughtful production and experienced oversight make all the difference. A seasoned planner ensures the celebration feels effortless for guests while every detail behind the scenes is handled with precision. If you need planner recommendations, I have a list of highly exceptional planners!
Parking & transportation
- Valet parking only per hotel policies.
For wedding weekends, most planners build a plan (especially if guests are also doing large group Charleston outings).
Weather + backup plans
Lowcountry humidity + pop-up storms are real in The South. The Shippon is the reason this venue works so well as a “rain-proof” luxury option.
Noise / community considerations
Because this is within the Kiawah River community, there are often community rules. Plan on standard luxury-resort event timing and work with the venue team on amplification cutoffs.
Best photo moments at The Dunlin
- Porch portraits (especially with the airy “summer house” styling)
- The Dunlin main entrance
- Golden hour on The Riverbank lawn + marsh edges
- Ceremony under the oaks at Yarrow Field
- Window-light inside The Shippon for reception candids

A solid “The Dunlin wedding venue weekend” structure
Friday
- Guests arrive + pool / river time
- Welcome party in the Willet Room and vibes spill well into a casual evening.
Saturday
- Getting ready in suites/rooms (Sweetbay Suite is the dream)
- Ceremony: Yarrow Field
- Cocktail hour: Riverbank Lawn
- Reception: The Shippon
- After Party: The Limehouse
Sunday
- Farewell brunch at Linnette’s, and additional relaxation time at the spa, or a dedicated event setup if you’re doing a full buyout-style weekend.
Final Reflections
For couples dreaming of a refined yet relaxed Southern wedding weekend, The Dunlin offers a rare balance of thoughtful design, elevated service, and true Lowcountry beauty. With the right creative team in place, The Dunlin becomes more than a venue, it becomes the setting for a full, unforgettable experience.
