The Vibe

Lowndes Grove is Charleston elegance with a touch of vintage. It’s historical without feeling outdated. The kind of venue that can support a black-tie affair, and a fashion-forward celebration that feels more like an experience than a traditional Southern wedding. The waterfront setting along the Ashley River instantly elevates the property, especially for couples who want their wedding to feel immersive from start to finish.

This is a venue for couples who care deeply about throwing a hell of a party that feels intentional and alive.

Ceremony & Event Spaces

One of Lowndes Grove’s biggest strengths is how versatile yet seamless the flow of the day feels.

  • Waterfront Lawn
The ceremony lawn overlooks the Ashley River and is one of the most iconic waterfront backdrops in Charleston. Live oaks, Spanish moss, and open sky create a timeless setting that doesn’t compete with your design. I love the dramatic walk from the house to the top of the aisle that builds the perfect amount of suspense.
  • The House & Grounds
Choosing to face the historic home is perfect for an iconic Lowndes grove ceremony shot. It adds architectural interest without overpowering the celebration and gives the day texture beyond just the lawn.
  • Tented Reception Space
Lowndes Grove has a permanent tented reception area that has a view of the Ashley River. This in combination with the extended bar area (also can be used as the dance floor) is what allows this venue to hold up to guests while seated under the main tent. Some receptions can be hosted under a sailcloth tent on the lawn, while using the original tent space for the dance floor. The reception space options allows for full creative freedom. Chandeliers, custom flooring, and statement bars are a planner’s playground and ideal for couples who want a truly bespoke reception design.
  • The River House
The River House is the sister property to Lowndes Grove and is located right next door. Its proximity allows guests to settle into the weekend with ease, creating a natural extension of the celebration without the need for additional transportation. Couples can choose to have their ceremony on this lawn as well, but keep in mind this could be an additional cost for just the ceremony.

Catering at Lowndes Grove

Catering at Lowndes Grove is handled in-house by Patrick Properties Hospitality Group, which is a major benefit for couples planning a seamless, high-touch wedding experience. Their culinary team offers an extensive menu selection, making it easy to tailor the food and service style to match the overall vision of the day. Whether that’s elevated Southern classics, seasonal coastal dishes, or a more modern approach to wedding dining. From a vendor perspective, it’s consistently some of the best food I experience on wedding days (and yes, the vendor meal is genuinely that good), which speaks volumes about the level of care and quality guests can expect throughout the celebration.

Getting Ready at Lowndes Grove

Lowndes Grove offers a thoughtful mix of getting-ready spaces that make the start of the day feel organized and stress-free. The upstairs rooms are especially well-suited for the bride and bridesmaids, with the back room featuring a private bathroom. This is ideal for getting ready comfortably and storing personal items, attire, and belongings in a secure spot throughout the evening. Downstairs, the home provides additional flexibility. The groom and groomsmen typically use one of the main rooms to get ready, while the yellow room is often designated for vendors to keep their things. This allows hair, makeup, and creative teams to work together efficiently without overlapping spaces. Altogether, this layout creates plenty of breathing room and makes it easy for everyone to move through the day with ease.

Guest Experience

Lowndes Grove excels at guest flow. Cocktail hour along the river feels relaxed, while the transition into the tented reception builds energy naturally. There’s plenty of space for mingling, dancing, and late-night moments without ever feeling cramped.

It’s especially strong for couples who want:

  • A long cocktail hour
  • Multiple experiential moments (champagne walls, oyster stations, live music)
  • A reception that feels like a party, not a program

Photography Perspective

From a photographer’s standpoint, Lowndes Grove is a dream for editorial yet natural storytelling.

  • Light: The most soft, flattering light throughout the day. Sunset portraits along the Ashley River are consistently stunning. An Iconic and romantic spot by the docs is where so many couples love to go for this portrait time.
  • Backdrops: Well designed interiors with limited furniture, and large rooms including historic textures. Both the look of inside and outside of this venue is hard to beat.
  • Rain Plan: I cannot talk enough about how this venue is so well suited for weather. In the event that the weather shifts, the house acts as the cocktail hour space while still giving your event a stunning backdrop. The reception tent has a front facing view of the water which allows guests to enjoy the landscape while protected from any inclement weather.

This venue supports a variety of photography locations which is why I love weddings here. It allows for so much creativity, and for that creativity to thrive because of how well equipped of a venue it is.

Design & Planning Considerations

Lowndes Grove is best suited for planner-led weddings. It’s reception space is essentially a blank canvas, so it does require thoughtful design and experienced coordination.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Rentals are key (chairs, tables, lighting, flooring)
  • Statement drapery and floral design shines here
  • A clear vision + strong vendor team = magic
  • This venue has a higher price point for JUST the venue

When done well, the result feels effortless, but that ease is the product of intentional planning. If you are looking for a planner, I have a list of some incredible women-led teams I have had the pleasure of working with!

Who Lowndes Grove Is Perfect For

This venue is an incredible fit for couples who:

  • Value design, fashion, and a high end guest experience
  • Want their wedding to feel editorial but not staged
  • Are hosting guests from out of town and want a wow factor
  • Care as much about the party as they do the aesthetics
  • Want an all in one location with gorgeous Southern Views
  • Looking for a venue thats downtown near plenty of hotels

If you’re envisioning a wedding that feels celebratory, custom, and full of Southern aesthetics, Lowndes Grove delivers every time.
